World Environment Day: To celebrate nature

World environment day celebrates almost in every country of the world on June 5th. Aiming to spread awareness about the issues the earth is facing. And to find out their solutions to conserve the resources. It was established as an annual event by the United Nations (UN) in 1972 and was first time observed in the US in 1974.

“Our planet’s alarm is going off, and it is time to wake up and take action”

Leonardo DiCaprio

As this is high time to learn about the environment and to take actions to recover its damage. Following this, the theme of world environment day this year (2021) is – “Ecosystem Restoration”.

“Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity.”

UN, World Environment Day, 2021.

Ecosystems are the interaction between living and non-living elements of the earth. Such as plants, animals, people, and their surroundings. It is either a well-developed city or a rural village. Peoples everywhere are abusing their resources. Because they are dependent on water, land, etc. for their living. And eventually, the ecosystem is getting exploited. Pollution, deforestation, and climate change are the ultimate results of ecosystem degradation. Hence, this theme aims to spread awareness about ecosystem restoration strategies.

This year the slogan for World Environment Day is – “Recreate, Reimagine, Restore”.

The ecosystem can be restored in different ways. Efforts can be done by promoting reforestation and greening cities. Restoration of water resources like rivers, lakes, and coasts. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle also contributes to it. Yet, it is not possible to return the ecosystem to its original health condition. But we can work to lessen the pressure on earth to recover on its own. Restoration of the ecosystem can also be supportive to accomplish sustainable development goals.

“Plans to protect air and water, wilderness and wildlife are in fact plan to protect man.”

Stewart Udall.
